The short answer
Journey Psychiatric Care is in-network with Oxford, so Oxford psychiatric care in Massachusetts is billed to your plan as an outpatient mental health visit. Oxford is part of UnitedHealthcare, and mental health on many Oxford plans is managed by Optum. Your costs depend on your plan. Check at uhc.com (Oxford is part of UnitedHealthcare) or call the number on your card.
Oxford plans and Massachusetts members
Oxford plans are mostly sold through employers in the New York area. If you live in Massachusetts and have Oxford, your plan probably comes from an employer based in New York, New Jersey or Connecticut. Before you book, confirm that your plan covers outpatient mental health with a Massachusetts provider.
You may see the names Oxford, UnitedHealthcare and Optum on your card, claims and letters. They are related companies. The behavioral health number on your card is usually the fastest way to a clear answer about psychiatric visits.
Joseph is a board-certified psychiatric nurse practitioner, not a psychiatrist or physician. He evaluates, diagnoses and prescribes by secure video. You need to be in Massachusetts during each visit. Read how telehealth visits work, compare all the plans we take or read how insurance covers telehealth psychiatry in Massachusetts.
Journey Psychiatric Care is in network with Oxford through Headway, a company that handles insurance credentialing and billing for independent clinicians. Your plan still treats the visits as in-network, and you may see Headway’s name on your bill. Your care is still with Joseph at every visit.
If your Oxford plan does not cover a Massachusetts provider, you still have options. Out-of-network benefits may pay part of the cost, and the practice provides invoices you can submit. Ask Oxford about out-of-network benefits on the same call.

How to check your Oxford benefits
- Call the behavioral health number. It is on the back of your card, often run by Optum.
- Ask about out-of-state providers. Confirm your plan covers a provider located in Massachusetts.
- Ask about telehealth. Check whether video visits with a psychiatric nurse practitioner are covered like office visits.
- Ask about referrals. Some Oxford plans need a PCP referral for specialist care.
- Book your evaluation. Request a time online or call 617-858-8276.

Frequently asked questions
Does Journey Psychiatric Care take Oxford?
Yes. The practice is in-network with Oxford. Because many Oxford plans are written for employers outside Massachusetts, confirm your plan covers a Massachusetts provider before your first visit.
Why does my claim say Optum or UnitedHealthcare?
Oxford is part of UnitedHealthcare, and Optum manages mental health benefits for many of its plans. Seeing those names on your claims is normal. Your coverage is still your Oxford plan.
What will I pay with Oxford?
That depends on your plan’s copay, deductible and coinsurance. The practice does not quote copays. Call the number on your card or sign in at uhc.com (Oxford is part of UnitedHealthcare).
I live in Massachusetts but work in New York. Can I be seen?
Yes, if you are in Massachusetts at the time of each visit. Joseph is licensed in Massachusetts, so a visit taken from your New York office would not work. Plan visits for days you are home.
Do Oxford plans need a referral?
Some do, especially HMO-style plans. Ask when you call about benefits. If you need one, your primary care provider can send it.
Will I see a different clinician each time?
No. You see Joseph Lavoie, PMHNP-BC, for your evaluation and every follow-up. Continuity is part of how the practice works.
