The short answer
Conditions treated by a psychiatric nurse practitioner at Journey Psychiatric Care include ADHD, anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, OCD, insomnia, grief, mood disorders, substance use, stress and burnout, LGBTQ+ concerns and life transitions.
Diagnosis first, then a plan
Joseph Lavoie, PMHNP-BC, is a board-certified psychiatric nurse practitioner. He is not a psychiatrist, and he is licensed to diagnose and prescribe in Massachusetts. Each condition page below explains the common signs, how treatment usually works and when to get help.
You don’t need to know your diagnosis before you book. Working that out is the point of a psychiatric evaluation. Treatment may include medication management, therapy or both.
Some people arrive with a diagnosis from a past provider and want ongoing care. Others only know that something feels wrong. Both are welcome. If you are changing prescribers, bring your medication list and recent records to the first visit, and read how to switch psychiatric providers.
Frequently asked questions
What conditions does a psychiatric nurse practitioner treat?
PMHNPs evaluate and treat a wide range of mental health conditions, including anxiety, depression, ADHD, bipolar disorder and OCD. The twelve listed above are the ones most often treated at Journey Psychiatric Care.
Is a PMHNP the same as a psychiatrist?
No. A psychiatrist is a physician. A PMHNP is an advanced practice nurse with graduate training in psychiatric care who can diagnose, provide therapy and prescribe in Massachusetts. Read the comparison.
What if my concern isn’t listed?
Call 617-858-8276 and ask. If another kind of care would serve you better, you will hear that plainly, along with help finding it.
Can you treat more than one condition at once?
Yes. Many conditions show up together, such as anxiety with depression or ADHD with sleep problems. The plan covers the whole picture rather than one label.
Do you treat these conditions in kids and teens?
Yes. Journey Psychiatric Care mainly sees teens and adults, and parents are part of care for patients under 18. See child and adolescent psychiatric care for how it works.
Do you only treat with medication?
No. Medication is one tool. Therapy, sleep and habit changes, and coordination with your other providers are part of care too.
Are some conditions better treated in person?
Yes. A mental health emergency, or a condition that needs close in-person monitoring or hospital care, is beyond what telehealth can safely offer. If that applies to you, Joseph will help you find the right setting.
